Farmers’ markets across Western Australia could soon see a boost, with the Cook Government launching a $2 million grant scheme to help local markets expand and thrive.

The Farmers’ Market Grant Scheme, the first of its kind in Australia, is now open to applications. Grants of up to $50,000 are available to support both existing markets and the development of new ones, with the aim of strengthening local food systems and creating more jobs.

The funding will help farmers’ markets improve operations and sustainability. It can go toward everything from infrastructure and planning to marketing, compliance and development.

Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis said the initiative would help support producers while giving the public better access to fresh, local produce.

“Farmers’ markets play a valuable role in our communities,” she said. “They allow customers to connect directly with producers and enjoy fantastic produce grown or made right here in WA.”

In addition to funding, the program includes a fully funded one-day training course developed by the Western Australian Farmers’ Markets Association. The course is designed to help market operators improve their business practices and performance.

The new scheme builds on the Cook Government’s ongoing investment in WA’s agrifood and beverage sector, including the Value Add Investment Grants and the Buy West Eat Best campaign.

Minister Jarvis said the grant scheme would help set local markets up for long-term success.

“I’m incredibly proud that our government is providing training and grants to support the growth of the sector in this Australian-first initiative,” she said.
