She wasn’t really expecting to be selected but her work paid off and Thandar Tun earned the Design and Product Development Award as part of TAFE’s annual graduate fashion show.

The Bentley resident created a collection label called New Age inspired by the contrasting qualities of rigid Roman architecture and the soft draped Roman dresses of sculptures of that time period.

Ms Tun said she felt shocked and delighted when she heard her name called during the awards night.

“I wasn’t really expecting to be selected for the award as every student in my class did awesome things for their collection as well,” she said.

“My biggest challenge was trying to finish all the garments within the time frame.”

Ms Tun believes the fashion industry is dynamically changing and growing and thinks that a lot of emerging designers have to face big competition to get their own name out there.

“I always wanted to be a fashion designer since I was a child and I used to draw and create dolls’ clothes with my sister and found an interest in fashion trends,” she said.

“My dream job is to have a chance to work with Alexander McQueen’s design team.”

Originally from Myanmar Ms Tun has plans to now go back to her home country and said she planned to launch her collection in 2020.
