To prepare for National Tree Day on July 27, community members in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale rallied together for a planting day on Saturday.

Led by Darling Downs Resident Association president Bruce Hillard, 51 volunteers attended the planting day in the wet weather which included volunteers from the SJ area as well as local bushfire brigade members.

Mr Hillard said the community gathering was a success and a “great demonstration of community spirit”.

“The planting day illustrates how local community members can work with business, non-government organisations, and the government to achieve important developments,” he said.

“It shows how we can make a positive impact on the environment to reintroduce native plants that deliver critical habitats for native fauna, while also improving public open spaces that benefit thousands of people in our community.”

In less than two hours, 1,164 native trees and bushes were planted on Saturday by the volunteers under the advice and use of equipment from Landcare SJ.

Mr Hillard said their support showed how impactful organisations are in making a difference to the local environment.

Metronet Byford Rail Extension project also donated the supplies including the plants, fertiliser and soil wetter with some of the company’s workers also helping to dig the holes for the plants on Wednesday before the planting day took place.

The volunteers planted the native vegetation in the area through ‘snakes’, which were made up of the planting tubes which held the trees and bushes.

The high volume of plants ensured the area at the Darling Downs Equestrian Park would be sufficiently protected with the high rate of trees and bushes surviving from Saturday.
