The Maddington Little Athletics Club has celebrated an outstanding season, with 36 records broken by its young athletes.

Among them is under-7 competitor Montana Hitchmough, who is in her first year at the club.

Her mum was once part of Little Athletics too, making the season extra special.

“This is my first year of little athletics, but my mum used to be there too,” Montana said.

Montana set new club records across several events and said hearing her name announced was a moment she will not forget.

“I felt so happy and excited that I heard my name called over the speaker, I was proud of myself.”

Hurdles and running are her favourite events “because it’s so much fun”. She also enjoys “being able to make new friends” and says her goal is “to do my best and can’t wait to start racewalks.”

Ruth, another record breaker, is in her first season with Maddington after previously competing with Gosnells.

“I felt very happy and excited to break the first record,” she said.

Hurdles, the 100m and long jump top her list. “Because they’re running and jumping which I like and I like to come first.”

She says the friendships are a big part of why she enjoys the club. “I really like the people and have made some nice friends like Chloe and Monty.”

Moving forward, Ruth wants to “keep doing running and jumping” and is keen to try longer runs, high jumps and walks next year. “I hope to break more records next year too.”

For Chet Smith, this season marked his fifth year with the club after starting in under 6s.

“It felt good, a great achievement,” he said of breaking a record.

He enjoys discus most “because I like the spin and I can throw far.” Living in Byford, he values the chance to see his athletics friends during the season.

“I get to see my athletic friends and make new ones. We live in Byford so I don’t see them unless season is on.”

His goal is “to get first at states in a throw event.”
