The City of Canning’s EcoConnect event held on Sunday proved to be a big hit with the community. Residents showed up focused on sustainability and the growing day’s urban green canopy.

Held at the Civic Centre and Old Town Hall, the event featured a free tree giveaway that saw many local residents walk away with new plants to enhance their gardens.

Mayor Patrick Hall expressed his appreciation for the turnout. He shared his enthusiasm on social media. “It was great to meet so many local residents at today’s event, and the cinnamon donuts were absolutely awesome,” he wrote. The event also saw the presence of Deputy Mayor Mark Bain, Councillor Shen Sekhon, and Councillor Joanne Page, who joined the Mayor and other attendees in supporting the community’s efforts to go green.

The free tree giveaway was a central feature of EcoConnect, with the City of Canning offering plant packs and trees to residents, providing an opportunity to contribute to the city’s Urban Forest Strategy. Residents were excited to take home trees and plants to add to their gardens and help grow the city’s green canopy.

In addition to the tree giveaway, the event included a variety of sustainability-focused activities. Community members had the chance to learn about waterwise gardening, explore eco-friendly products at the Eco-Marketplace, and enjoy a tree-themed art exhibition. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm, as people of all ages gathered to celebrate the city’s commitment to a greener, healthier future.

Mayor Hall has invited those who attended the event to share their feedback, asking if the tree giveaway met expectations and whether communication was clear. His call for input shows the City’s dedication to improving future events and continuing to engage with the community on environmental issues.
