The Byford Progress Association’s Bag Ladies and Lads together with Byford Envirolink have been cleaning up Anketell Road.

In the last month they have picked up rubbish filling 320 bags in just one kilometre.

The Shire of Serpentine Jarraahdale pays the association three dollars per bag and the money raised from the rubbish collection goes towards paying for sculptures on South Western Highway and throughout the Byford area.

Byford Progress Association president Colleen Rankin said the association was saving up to plant native seedlings on council reserves and road verges.

“We began picking up the rubbish in May,” she said.

“We’re still at it in June, we won’t be doing any this weekend but we will the next weekend.”

Ms Rankin said she worked with a great group of people.

“There is so much satisfaction to see a road clean,” she said.

“Everyone enjoys what they do and not only are they cleaning up but they can keep fit at the same time.”

Ms Rankin said she had come across various items which had been discarded along the road including a dinning room suite, washing machine and television.

“I can’t understand why people would throw something out the window,” she said.

“There has been a lot of dumping but so far we have collected about $500 worth of bags.

“We will be able to plant our seedlings.”
