With council elections just around the corner the race to be voted in has been tense and heated.
In the lead up to the October 21 election Maddington candidate Sandy Bariaolo alleged her signs, banners and corflutes were stolen, a story covered by The Examiner earlier this month.
Following her allegations about the stolen items Ms Bariaolo responded to comments made against her implying the thefts were a publicity stunt to gain sympathy and voters.
“Why would I waste police time if this was a publicity stunt?” she said.
“As soon as I found out my banners and corflutes had been stolen I contacted them.
“Under no circumstances would I waste police time.”
Ms Bariaolo said her signs once again have been tampered with when she discovered white paint poured over a sign on Corfield Street on October 9.
She said the damage has not deterred her from running for council though and she hoped to make a positive difference in the community if elected.
Ms Bariaolo also alleged Gosnells Going Forward chairman Leon Walker was working to discredit her.
At the October 10 council meeting Mr Walker asked if it was an offence under the Local Government Act 1995 to make false or misleading claims about the alleged theft of election signs, or if it was a criminal matter.
City of Gosnells chief executive Ian Cowie said the Local Government Act did not deal with criminal offences such as theft and all such matters should be reported to the police.
Mr Walker also stated Ms Bariaolo’s claims about the alleged theft of her election signs were unsubstantiated.
In a letter to The Examiner he wrote that the best service Ms Baraiolo could afford the community was to immediately take herself and her election signs on a long sea voyage perhaps as a deck cargo on a submarine.
