Susan Shaw, Ruby Prosser and Isabella Smith celebrated a birthday milestone last week.

An Armadale resident who celebrated her 100th birthday last week said she had picked up a few tricks for lifelong happiness over the past century.

Ruby Prosser was born on November 24, 1917, and has lived in Armadale much of her life.

On November 20 a party was thrown in her honour at Armadale Lotteries House to celebrate the event with friends.

Despite reaching triple figures, Ms Prosser said she had not been counting down the days to the milestone.

“I didn’t even think about it really,” she said.

“It just crept up on me.”

About 30 friends attended the party, which included singing and dancing, a large birthday cake, board games and hours of catching up to be done.

It was not until the 1950s that many homes across the Armadale region began getting electricity connections, and Ms Prosser said when she first moved to the area around that time Armadale was very different to how it is now.

“It’s grown,” she said.

“It was bush across from Eighth Road, now it’s all houses.”

Her husband, whom she married in 1954 and passed away in 2002, worked at a local school for years and her son and daughter still live in the area.

She said after a century of life she had only a few simple pieces of advice for younger generations.

“Do things your way,” she said.

“Fit in with other people – that’s the main thing.

“If you get along with people, it makes life a lot easier.”
