Children and their families are in for a treat this August with a day of stories, creativity and fun at Amherst Village Library in Southern River.
The Children’s Book Week Festival will take place on Saturday, August 23 from 10am to 2pm, offering a packed schedule of free activities for all ages.

There will be Story Time sessions, gem mining, badge making, face painting and more to spark the imagination. Budding readers and writers can also meet celebrated authors and illustrators Deb Fitzpatrick, Renee Treml and Meg McKinlay, who will run engaging workshops including Creative Writing, Create Your Own Poetry Collage and Graphic Novel Creations.
In the lead-up to the big day, illustrator Gabriel Evans will host an interactive workshop, Ink and Imagination, on Wednesday, August 20 from 4pm to 5pm. He will guide children through the steps of creating a character, before letting them put pen to paper and create their own.
City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes said the events were a chance to inspire a lifelong love of reading.
“We are very pleased to welcome these accomplished authors and illustrators to our Children’s Book Week celebrations,” she said.
“Events like these give local kids a chance to peek behind the curtain of storytelling, discover new ideas and let their imaginations run wild.”
She said this year’s theme, ‘Book an Adventure’, was a perfect reminder of how books can take children anywhere.
“It’s true – kids who read can take an adventure in the pages of a book,” she said.

The Children’s Book Week Festival is supported by the WA Government and the Children’s Book Council of Australia WA.
