The State Government is investing $27.9 million to build 38 new social homes in the inner southern suburb of St James, as part of an ongoing effort to address housing challenges in Perth.
This new development will feature one, two, and three-bedroom apartments designed by Cameron Chisholm Nicol architects and constructed by West to West Group.
Once completed, the complex will be managed by a registered community housing provider, ensuring that these homes are well-maintained and accessible to those in need.
The location of the complex is ideal, with easy access to public transport, schools, and shopping areas.
It’s also within close proximity to the East Victoria Park food and entertainment precinct, making it an attractive option for residents.
Construction is set to begin soon, with the project expected to be finished by late 2026.
This new development is part of the State Government’s broader strategy to increase affordable housing, following its record $5.1 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since July 2021.
In total, nearly 3,000 social homes have been added to the state’s housing supply, with another 1,000 already under contract or under construction.
Housing and Works Minister, John Carey, highlighted the importance of this initiative.
“Our government is doing everything it can to bolster housing supply through our record $5.1 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures since 2021,” he said.
Another 38 new social homes being delivered in St James will provide a critical boost to housing supply in the inner metropolitan area.”
The government has implemented several strategies to increase affordable housing, including building more social homes, cutting planning red tape, releasing land, growing the construction workforce, and incentivising owners to put vacant properties on the rental market. These efforts aim to make affordable housing more accessible to all Western Australians.
