Thousands of Perth residents have stepped up to support people struggling this winter, donating more than 11,700 items to Sonshine FM’s annual Heart for the Homeless appeal.

Now in its seventh year, the appeal wrapped up this week with a record response across the city. More items are still coming in.

Sonshine FM’s breakie crew Leah and Dan were there to lend a hand.

Christian radio station Sonshine 98.5FM led the campaign, working alongside hundreds of volunteers, 25 collection points and generous businesses to meet urgent needs as the cold weather sets in.

One of the biggest donations came from Bunnings, which provided over 270 sleeping bags.

Local churches and schools from Kelmscott, Maddington and Southern River also took part, including Chosen Church, Centrepoint Church and Providence Christian College.

The appeal has grown year on year, emphasising the strength of community support for people experiencing homelessness.

Sonshine FM is based in Como and broadcasts across Perth. The station said it was grateful for the widespread support and hoped the donated items would make a real difference this winter.
