To raise money for the Special Olympics, the Armadale Police Force and the Armadale Rangers took the plunge last Wednesday night, submerging themselves in the cold pool at Armadale Aquatic Centre in full uniforms.
The local version of WA Police’s Polar Plunge at Hillary’s Boat Harbor – which was held last Saturday, the weekend after the Armadale Police plunge – raised $3500 for the Special Olympics.
Former athlete Geoff Stewart was also in attendance at the winter event to raise money to better the sporting opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities or for people who are on the autism spectrum, as the Armadale Police force jumped for their fifth year.
The Polar Plunge is a nation-wide event, stemming from the Torch Run which began in the United States in 1981.
Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon created the first event with four other officers to support the Special Olympics before the initiative spread to 32 countries across the world, with more than 110,000 police officers “freezing for a reason” every year.
2025 was also the fifth year the WA Police were involved in the polar plunge, with donations still open online at include.specialolympics.com.au/event/pp-armadale-25/donate.
