Warm hearts and small comforts are at the centre of this year’s Care Kits Campaign, as the City of Canning encourages residents to lend a helping hand to those in need this winter.
Running from June 9 to June 22, the 2025 campaign invites locals to donate essential winter items and toiletries at four drop-off points across the city: Riverton Library, Cannington Library, Willetton Library, and the Civic Centre.
The initiative builds on last year’s successful blanket drive, which saw more than 500 items donated. This time, the city is expanding its reach by collecting a broader range of goods that will be bundled into Care Kits and distributed to local charities.
Mayor Patrick Hall said the campaign was a simple but powerful way to show support to those in need.
“Winter can be especially hard for people facing financial hardship or homelessness,” he said. “Through the Care Kits Campaign, we’re offering the Canning community an opportunity to give a little warmth, dignity and care to those who need it most.”
Donated items must be new or near-new and include warm clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, jackets, scarves, gloves, thermal socks and rain ponchos. Travel-sized toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, feminine hygiene products and hand sanitiser are also welcome.
Other helpful items include reusable water bottles, shopping bags, tissues, lip balm and small nonperishable snacks.
Mayor Hall urged the community to get behind the campaign, saying every donation counts.
“A small item to you, like socks or shampoo, could be a lifeline for someone else. Every bit helps,” he said. “If you’re able, please drop a donation at one of our collection points this June.”
The city has asked that all second-hand items such as jackets or blankets be freshly washed and that all toiletries and accessories be brand new.
