Crime Wrap | Police probe Cannington robbery and assault, Arson Squad investigates Southern River house fire and Bike loan leads to arrest

Arson Squad seeks info on Southern River house fire. 

Arson Squad detectives are seeking public information regarding a house fire that occurred in Southern River on Thursday, November 7, with the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire being treated as suspicious.

At approximately 8:30pm, fire emergency services and police were called to a home on Lakey Street.

With the home fully engulfed in flames, neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The fire was extinguished by DFES; however, the home was destroyed, with damages estimated at $350,000.

Arson Squad officers are urging anyone with CCTV, mobile phone, or dash-cam footage, or any information related to the house fire, to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperswa.com.au.

Information that leads to the identification and conviction of an arsonist can result in a reward of up to $25,000.

Police probe Cannington robbery and assault

Cannington Detectives are seeking the public’s assistance in relation to a robbery incident that occurred in a Cannington carpark on Saturday November 9.

At around 8:20 pm, police received reports of an assault that took place near a supermarket on Cecil Avenue.

It’s understood that the victim, a man in his 30s, was sitting in his vehicle when he was approached by three men.

The men then assaulted the victim and stole a large sum of cash from his vehicle during the altercation. It’s believed that all parties are known to each other.

St. John WA attended the scene, and the victim was transported to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment of facial lacerations.

Bike loan leads to robbery arrest

Cannington Police are praising a member of the public who lent his bicycle to an officer during the pursuit of a robbery suspect.

In a post on Facebook, Cannington District – WA Police Force wrote, “After clocking up some kilometres on the wheels, our sergeant was happy to return the bike safe and sound. Thank you, sir.”

This assistance helped officers during a lengthy foot and bicycle chase that caused chaos around a busy shopping centre, resulting in a 22-year-old man being charged with 15 offences, including aggravated robbery.

In total, two men and one woman were charged with 21 offences following a busy day in the Cannington police district.

Charges laid after bus incident

A 42-year-old man has been charged with ‘unlawful and indecent assault’ by Cannington Police in relation to an indecent assault that occurred on a bus in Cannington last month.

At around 8 am on Thursday, October 10, a man boarded the 930 route bus at a stop on Albany Highway in Cannington, heading towards the  Causeway Bus Station in Victoria Park.

It is alleged the man then sat next to a woman in her 20s and, after placing a rucksack on his lap, indecently assaulted her by inappropriately touching one of her legs.

The 42-year-old man will appear before the Armadale Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 27.
