The City of Canning will prepare a detailed review of lighting across its Public Access Ways after councillors supported a motion calling for clearer information on where upgrades are needed.
The motion, put forward by councillors Shen Sekhon and Paul Tucek, passed unanimously at Tuesday’s meeting. It asks the city to identify which pathways have no lighting or inadequate lighting, the number of sites involved and how future upgrades could be prioritised.
Councillor Sekhon said concerns about poorly lit PAWs have been raised frequently by residents since 2022. She said the feedback has come through conversations at schools, sporting clubs and community events.
Data from community requests shows Willetton accounts for 35 percent of lighting concerns, followed by Parkwood at 23 percent, Lynwood at 20 percent and Shelley and Ferndale at 10 percent each. The city has about 220 PAWs.

Discussions between the City and Western Power about the transition away from the PowerWatch program are ongoing.
The current annual budget for PAW lighting is $50,000. The city has installed 24 lights to date as part of earlier upgrades.
Local resident Selina Raj said some pathways are avoided after sunset because of low visibility.

A business case outlining costs and options will be presented to councillors at a strategic briefing in March 2026. The review will also consider possible state or federal funding sources and may inform decisions for the 2026/27 budget.
Community members can follow the progress of the work through the City’s agendas and minutes.
