The skies above Bentley will be awash with colourful kites on October 17 with the inaugural Perth basant festival.

Basant festivals across the world bring people from different cultural and religious backgrounds together to celebrate the beginning of spring.

Alongside kite flying there would be hundreds of activities to promote multiculturalism and harmony.

The festival was set to be one of the biggest in the country.

It was being organised by So change, an initiative by Perth residents working for a more inclusive, culturally richer community by helping migrants and refugees settle in the Australian work environment.

So change president Muhammad Salman said the festival would provide networking opportunities for culturally and linguistically diverse people.

“The basant festival is an event that marks the coming of spring, brings together people from all walks of life, cover Perth’s sky with colours and pread happiness ubiquitously among our multicultural society,” he said.

“It’s about bringing together people with fun activities reducing the barriers between them.

“People can taste different countries’ foods, do crafts and enjoy the entertainment.
The festival will be held at Curtin stadium, Kent Street, Bentley from 11am to 5pm.

It will have kite making classes.
