The Kelmscott Progress Network (KPN) has raised concerns regarding the quality and upkeep of local median strips.
“It’s disappointing that, for the second time in six months, we’ve had to notify Main Roads WA and City of Armadale officers about the condition of the median strips along Albany Highway in Kelmscott,” a KPN spokesperson said.
“We understand this isn’t an easy or cheap area to maintain, but the current standard simply isn’t good enough. Our main street is one of the first things residents and visitors see, and its presentation matters.
“If we’re encouraging businesses to invest in Kelmscott, maintain their shopfronts and have confidence in the future of the town centre, then our public spaces need to reflect that same commitment.
“We appreciate the work involved in maintaining these areas, but there needs to be a better, more consistent approach so this doesn’t keep happening. However, we’re hopeful the issue will be addressed promptly and that a longer-term solution can be found.”
The City of Armadale issued a response to the KPN’s complaints.
“Following the completion of the Denny Avenue level crossing removal project and the contractor maintenance period, the City has accepted responsibility for maintaining these median strips on behalf of Mains Roads,” said a City spokesperson.
“Maintenance works were undertaken at the site on 14 July and the location has now been incorporated into a monthly maintenance program by the City to help ensure a more consistent standard moving forward.
“The works were booked in by the City several weeks ago but as these medians are located within a busy road corridor, maintenance activities require traffic management approvals from Main Roads to ensure the safety of both workers and road users.
“This can sometimes result in a delay between an issue being identified and works being carried out.”
