Young people in Gosnells’ City have a new place to skate, ride, play and hang out, with the $6.7 million Youth Entertainment Space (YES) now open at Sutherlands Park.
Designed with help from local youth, the facility includes a skating plaza with rails and ramps, a shallow bowl for beginners and pros alike, and a sealed pump track for BMX, scooters and mountain bikes.
There’s more than just wheels. YES also features an urban play area with chill-out zones, social swings, platform seating, a rebound wall and a court space that works for basketball, futsal and netball.
Mayor Terresa Lynes said the facility was one-of-a-kind in metropolitan Perth.
“YES is covered by a huge, bright shelter so it can be used year-round, no matter the weather,” she said. “It even has LED lights and projectors so youth events can run into the night.”
“This facility sends a message to young people – they are valued and are an important part of our community.”
The project received $4.7 million from the City of Gosnells, with another $2 million from the State Government.
Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley praised the effort, saying it showed what happens when governments and communities work together.
“This project has been many years in the making, and driven by local young people to ensure the final plaza reflects their interests and aspirations,” she said.
The space is part of the broader Sutherlands Park Master Plan, which intends to turn the area into a major hub for sport and recreation.
