South Thornlie Primary School recently welcomed Colleen Egan, MLA for Thornlie, who spoke to the Year 6 students as part of a special career talk. Drawing from her experience as both a journalist and a Member of Parliament, Ms Egan shared her passion for representing and serving the community, something she described as the most satisfying aspect of her work.
The session included an engaging question-and-answer segment, where students asked about her career path and personal experiences. When asked if her current work connected to her childhood interests, Ms Egan revealed that her love of reading, her curiosity and questioning things around her from a young age played a big role in shaping her journey. She also shared that her first jobs after high school included working at KFC and on prawn trawlers, offering the advice that it’s okay to take time to figure out what you want to do while discovering your true career path.

The visit was a valuable and inspiring experience for the students, who gained insight into the many possibilities that lie ahead and the importance of following their interests.
