Police were called to Banksia Hill Detention Centre last night after reports several inmates had rioted inside of the centre.

At about 7.20pm on Thursday officers attended the centre in Canning Vale to control the situation.

Seven young people aged between 15 and 18-years-old were alleged to have smashed items including glass in the male-only unit of the facility.

During the incident seven staff locked themselves in rooms for safety.

A Department of Corrective Services spokesperson said five people were involved initially and two more joined in later.

One of the participants surrendered shortly after the incident began.

Police and Department of Fire and Emergency Services attended the scene but did not enter the facility until the incident was resolved.

After attempts to calm and negotiate with the boys failed, the department’s Special Operations Group entered the centre.

Two distraction devices and pepper spray were used to control the inmates.

One young person suffered an asthma attack, one a cut leg and a third had his eye injured from glass.

No staff members were injured.

Those involved were moved to the Harding Unit which is reserved for inmates who have been violent toward themselves or others.

Police are still investigating.

The incident came less than a year after a series of riots at the facility in September 2016 which caused about $250,000 worth of damage.
