A woman died in a horrifying house fire in Byford on Wednesday.

The woman was reportedly seen running from the Lovegrove Court property with her clothes on fire.

Neighbours and furniture removalists tried to save the woman but she died at the scene.

A nearby construction worker said he had been unaware of the tragedy unfolding on the quiet street until he heard sirens.

“We were here all morning and it wasn’t until we heard the sirens that we realised something was going on,” he said.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman confirmed the fire was reported at 10.21am.

She said six crews attended and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes.

A police spokesman said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire but police were investigating.

The woman’s identity was yet to be released.
