Witherspoon at it again

Reese Witherspoon and Pico Alexander in Home Again.

I didn’t expect much from Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s Home Again, the trailer looked predictable, and made the story seem amusing but nothing I hadn’t seen before, but after a string of hits spanning more than 10 years, I was curious to see Reese Witherspoon acting again, and she did not disappoint.

If it wasn’t for her charm and vulnerability playing a single mum, Home Again ran the risk of being boring.

Alice (Witherspoon) is a single mum living in Los Angeles with her two young daughters, Isabel and Rosie.

Recently divorced from her playboy wannabe husband (Michel Sheen) she relocates to her family home and is trying to juggle an interior design business as well as look after her children.

However, on her 40th birthday she meets Harry (Pico Alexander) a 20 something broke filmmaker and his friends George (Jon Rudnitsky) and Teddy (Nat Wolff).

One thing leads to another and before Alice knows it the boys are crashing at her place and she’s falling in love with Harry, despite having concerns about the age barrier and being at different stages in their lives.

Thrown into the mix is Alice’s mother Lillian (Candice Bergen) who encourages her daughter to live a little.

The story is generic and nothing new but the chemistry between the cast is enjoyable to watch.

Reese Witherspoon effortlessly carries the movie, but even her star quality can’t save it from being a movie you watch and then forget about.
