Last year’s city of Armadale NAIDOC Week celebrations were a great success.

The City of Armadale is calling all residents to celebrate the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the City of Armadale at its annual NAIDOC Celebration Day at Bob Blackburn Oval on July 4.

The city will host its Armadale NAIDOC Celebration Day from 10am to 3pm at the oval on Challis Road, Seville Grove.

As part of the event the city has partnered with artist Brothaboy who will host the NAIDOC Youth Music Festival at the same venue afterwards.

From 3pm to 8pm locals can enjoy music with Triple J Unearthed hip-hop artist K.P, DJ EDUB and eastern states indigenous star DJ Kidd Benny.

A free sausage sizzle and other activities will be provided.

Mayor Henry Zelones said the event was an all-inclusive celebration and wanted all residents to take part regardless of ethnicity or background.

“We are pleased to see a growing number of non-indigenous people attending our NAIDOC celebrations each year, as it demonstrates a willingness to learn more about the culture, history and achievements of our indigenous community members,” he said.

The theme of NAIDOC 2017 is “language matters” which is focusing on the preservation and revitalisation of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages – the earliest languages of the land.

“This is a chance to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander cultures with music, entertainment, food and information stalls providing loads of information on programs and services available to the community,” Mr Zelones said.

Seville Grove library will also be providing children’s activities on NAIDOC day from 11am to 3pm.

Children will be able to make a book to display in the Armadale Book Cubby and will receive a free copy of the locally produced book We Are Champion Children for their contribution.

Bookings were not required and the session will be suitable for the whole family.
