Southern River College received an $8.4 million grant as part of the State Government’s $465 million investment in infrastructure at public schools in WA.

On Monday Member for Southern River Terry Healy handed over a cheque to the school.

The funding will be used to refurbish the science rooms, design and technology facilities, build a performing arts centre and upgrade the school with construction set to commence next year.

Southern River College principal Everal Miocevich said the grant was fantastic.

She met with architects on September 12 to discuss the future upgrades of the school.

Ms Miocevich said she hoped by Easter next year construction would be underway.

“We can’t wait,” she said.

“All of this will go towards helping our students.”

Ms Miocevich said the funding would help support the school and help students prepare for their futures.

P&C president and former Southern River student Karen Adams said she was excited about the funding.

“It’s quite an old school,” she said.

“It’s been around for some 40 odd years and it needs to change.”

Member for Southern River Terry Healy said he was proud to deliver on his election promise.

“One of the main reasons I ran as a member of Parliament was because I wanted to keep the promise of redeveloping the college,” he said.

“The funding will mean so much to our local community and will support the aspirations of so many students.”
