Sausage Party’s a good laugh

2178

Seth Rogan and his crew are clearly people who won’t take no for an answer and lovers of comedy should thank their lucky groceries they don’t.

Sausage Party, written and directed by Rogan, Evan Goldberg and Jonah Hill of This Is The End fame, is one of the first MA15 animated movies and it packs a punch.

It follows a hot dog named Frank (voiced by Rogan), who resides in a grocery store with thousands of other products.

All of the products have been fed a lie that being bought by a human means they go to ‘the great beyond’ where all their wildest dreams come true.

After speaking to a jar of mustard that returns to the shop after visiting the great beyond, Frank finds out the great beyond is actually somewhere they get cut up and eaten, so he sets off on a journey through the shop to find answers.

The story is sexually charged by Frank’s love interest Brenda the hot dog bun, voiced by Ghostbusters star Kristen Wiig.

The chemistry between the two is as you would expect for a hot dog and a bun, and lots of jokes ensue.

The film’s villain, a sanitary product called Douche voiced by Nick Kroll, adds a few more avenues for bad puns and jokes.

Offensive and gratuitous jokes will turn some people off but for most they will be the biggest drawcards.

Edward Norton’s Jewish bagel character Sammy Bagel Jr and David Krumholtz’s Turkish bread character Lavash walk the line of taste very finely before the final few scenes where they spit on it and kick it to the curb.

The film keeps taking you on a crazier and crazier journey with brutal mass murder, casual racism and grocery sex scenes until you leave the cinema having to pick your jaw up off the floor.

Sausage Party will be wildly popular because it taps into Gen Y’s growing love of nostalgia.

We still want films that remind us of greats like Toy Story but we’re old enough for the toys to have some fun with each other on camera.
