Labor candidate for Southern River Terry Healy comes from a family of teachers with 10 of them working in education.

A Thornlie native, Mr Healy, a teacher himself, said his students were one of the reasons he entered politics.

“The State Government did not honour their promise to refurbish pre-1980 schools,” he said.

“They also cut funding.

“I got a call from Sue Ellery and Mark McGowan as I’d been whinging about the issue for a while and they asked me if I would like to stand.

“That’s where it all began.”

Married for two years and now the proud father of a six-month-old baby girl Mr Healy said the campaign has been a wonderful process so far.

Some of the issues he has addressed include education, the creation of jobs, transport and addressing the meth crisis.

Mr Healy said there was a mood for change.
