Juniors take on Pickering Brook

Last Sunday saw the state junior road racing titles at Pickering Brook.

Peel district cycling club was represented in the under 17s men division by Tyler Lindorf and Conor Leahy while in the under 15s men category it was Jordan Dawson and Oliver Bleddyn.

The course was significantly different from the usually flat Peel courses and after starting on a short eight-kilometre undulating lap, the riders faced a 14-kilometre lap with a tough three-kilometre climb.

It was completed twice by the under 15s and four times by the under 17s.
The under 15s stayed together until the first time on the big climb, where Jacob Wright attacked.

Dawson chased and caught Wright at the top of the climb.

Behind the pair the race exploded, scattering riders along the course.

Dawson and Wright stayed together for a lap and at the next climb Dawson rode away to secure a solo win two minutes clear of Wright. James Derrick was third and Bleddyn sixth.

In the under 17s a break of three riders was established on the first of four laps on the main course.

Leahy bridged across to join the leaders on the main climb.

On the descent three more riders joined them including Lindorf and Craig Wiggins.
Over the next three laps the breakaway established a 10-minute advantage over the main bunch.

With a few kilometres to go Lindorf attacked up a small climb and established a small gap on the group.

Wiggins was the only rider who could manage to get across to Lindorf in the sprint.

It was Wiggins first, Lindorf second, Hayden Turton was third, Leahy was sixth.

Next week is the state junior time trial championships and the following week cycling will return to Baldivis at the dog hill circuit on August 8.
