Young Robin was the winner of the Gozzy Rock competition 2016.

Local musicians can be part of history by entering Gozzy Rock’s 30th anniversary competition.

It is believed to be the longest running competition of its kind in Australia and offers a chance for musicians to win a part of $10,000 in cash and prizes.

Applications to enter the competition is now open for unsigned bands playing original music with at least one band member aged 25 or under.

City of Gosnells mayor Olwen Searle said in the past 30 years Gozzy Rock had become a local institution with past winners going on to tour nationally and overseas.

“Through Gozzy Rock the city has been proudly supporting and promoting unsigned bands for more than a generation now,” she said.

“It’s a wonderful program to be a part of because it provides performance experience, an opportunity for unsigned bands to promote themselves and networking opportunities.”

Ms Searle said the competition also provided an exciting chance for the wider community to see emerging local talent and support original live music.

Competition in last year’s Gozzy Rock was particularly close, with only five points separating winners Young Robin, a five piece Indy pop band, from their rivals.

Previous success stories include finalists from 2004, Bus56, who later changed their name to Sons of Rico and achieved national success, touring Australia.

They continue to record and release new music from their home base in Melbourne.

Singer and songwriter Josh Johnstone is currently touring Europe with his new band, after first performing at Gozzy Rock in 1995 with a band called Red Cordial, which won the encouragement award that year.

Heats for the 30th anniversary competition will take place at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre in Thornlie on August 19 and 20 before the finals take place on August 27.

Past winners will also perform at the finals event, to celebrate Gozzy Rock’s 30th anniversary.
