Canning Show ready to go

A tight showgrounds reconstruction timeline meant this year’s Canning Show was coined as the one that could not happen but on November 4 and 5 doubters will be proven wrong.

In January this year construction began on a complete redesign of the showgrounds in Station Street, Cannington following the demolition of the old Greyhounds racetrack.

Work finished earlier this month and the Canning Show will be the first big event to be hosted there.

Canning Agricultural Horticultural and Recreational Society executive officer Dianne Begg said this year’s show would be a special one.

“We’ve spent over $2 million on reconstructing the showgrounds,” she said.

“The site is larger and has been returfed, there’s new streetlights and new parking.

“This is the show they said we might not have because a lot of people thought we couldn’t do the reconstruction works in the time available.

“It is satisfying and also pleasing that the community didn’t miss out for a year.

“We’ve had a continuity of service and that’s really satisfying, personally I’m wrapped.”

Annual festivities returning include the opening fireworks display at 9pm Friday night, sideshow alley, roving performers, stage entertainment and food vendors.

This year there will be a jam-packed farmland full with petting farms, roaming sheep, free pony rides and the outback production Sydney or the Bush.

New to the show this year Danger Cabaret will hit the main stage with Lil Darlings of Vaudeville, a quirky family friendly show with an assortment of weird and wonderful talents.

Show goers can also enjoy a free silent disco, a remote control trucks area, woodworking workshops and children can look forward to free rides all weekend on a classic carousel.

On display will be local exhibits in arts and crafts, photographs, home and dairy produce, baked goods, garden exhibits and performance art.

The show closure will be done in concert style with the Bee Gee’s tribute Saturday Night Fever.

Gates open 5pm to 10pm November 4 and 9am to 10pm November 5.

This year entry is only available from Station Street.

Children 15 years and under get free admittance when accompanied by an adult.

General admission is $10.
