Amazon princess tears up the screen

Wonder Woman emerges from the trenches to fight the Germans.

After a string of overhyped big budget disasters specifically Batman versus’s Superman, DC have finally redeemed themselves with Wonder Woman.

Starring Gal Gadot (Fast and Furious franchise) as the famed Amazon princess, this is the first time her origin story has hit the big screen.

Taking the alias Diana Prince, Wonder Woman finds herself leaving her mystical island of Themyscira as she joins forces with an American spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine).

Together they embark on a journey through the battlefields of the First World War in their quest to destroy the diabolic plans of Dr Poison (Elena Anaya) and General Ludendorff (Danny Huston) who Wonder Woman is convinced is actually Aries, God of War.

The simple story line of good versus evil is engaging and easy to follow, unlike previous DC movies, which tried to cram in numerous story lines making the movie feel disjointed.

However, Wonder Woman was anything but disjointed.

Right from the opening scene my attention was grabbed and as the story unfolded I felt drawn to the characters.

Sameer (Said Taghmaoui) the smooth talking Middle Eastern who secretly wants to be an actor rather than a solider, Charlie (Ewen Bremner) the marksman haunted by the war and Chief (Eugene Brave Rock) the wise Native American all brought a little bit of magic to the storyline as they find themselves joining forces with Wonder Woman.

The special effects were nothing short of stunning and the score by Rupert Gregson-Williams was exactly how a super hero movie should be.

There was also just the right dose of female empowerment woven cleverly into the script without seeming forced or thrown in for the sake of political correctness.

Hopefully the following DC stories scheduled to be released including Aquaman and Justice League will follow suite – if it does it’s a guaranteed epic.
